I rescued 2 chickens today - Help me treat plz - GOOD NEWS UPDATE

You and your family are to be commended on the nice job you've done in rescuing and treating these little "life forces". You should be rewarded by the bright little eyes on the chickens.

Sorry about the kitten. I have a dumpster cat and a pound puppy so I know how rescue animals can touch your heart.

Just a thought: Have you considered a tub of clean, play sand for them to walk on and play in? It's fairly soft and if you're soaking their feet, it will come out and not cause infections. Also, it stays dry so it won't add to moisture aggravation of the feet. I wonder that if their feet are still sore, even shavings can cause discomfort. Just a thought.

We use layers of newspaper when we keep our little chickens in the basement overnite, because its so easy to keep sanitary! The soiled top layers get rolled up and discarded.

I wonder if that would feel good on the sore feet? Pretty cushy.

Once my DH worried the "ink" on the newspapers was actually toner, which could be toxic. so I switched to using up the old rolls of christmas wrap, layered. The glossy side down. Still cushy, and the soiled sheets just roll away and get discarded.

Your rescued chickens are beautiful! What a neat pair! I had to wonder how old? I am a nurse, and I often care for people's feet that look like that, only they're usually very old people!

Good luck, they're very lucky chickens!

Just a quick update. The pair of banties are still improving. I put a 1x2 in through the cage and they love roosting on it. The redness is all gone from the roos feet. The hens toe is still scabbed all up but still not bleeding.

On a positive note, my EE pullet is much better. She can walk and stand again and is eating and drinking well. Not real sure what the deal was with her but the molasses flush seemed to work wonders. I am going to keep her quarantined for a bit because I'm not sure what it was... Plus I am not sure if she was getting picked on as a result of being sick... Or she became sick from the stress of being picked on.

Now that the banties are doing well enough that I am pretty sure they will make it, I have decided to name them. Not sure what to name them, but I would like some suggestions from all of you that helped with advise on getting them healthy. Maybe we can take some suggestions and then vote on which we like the best. So if you have an idea - post it in the thread!

I will have so see what I can find around that may be softer on their feet. I do have a towel in there but they seem to avoid it like the plague. They really just prefer to roost over anything else right now.

I don't know how old they are. The man said he got them in the spring, but I forgot to ask if they were chicks then or already grown. He said the hen does lay eggs, but stopped when it got cold. I know he hasn't had them for more than a year because there is no way they would have survived a winter in the cage they were in.

I have been thinking about it and I think I am going to get some of that paper stuff for hamsters. The stuff that is poofy chunks of paper for bedding. I do have some sand around so I will try that as well.

I kind of like Annie and Oliver

I am going to get some photos of them in a little bit here so everyone can see how far they have come along.

It was a little warmer today so I decided to give the hen a full-body bath. I couldn't believe how much she enjoyed being blow dried off so I video taped it lol. I will upload it to youtube in a bit.

Here is the scab that FINALLY fell off her toe:
