I was just holding one of my chicken and up by her eye where there are no feathers there was a tiny, tiny whitish bug crawling around. Is this a mite or lice? How do I tell which it is and is sevin the only treatment? Can people catch it? Help!

Thank you!

Skin parasites like mites and lice are species-specific. They can be transferred from wild birds to domestic fowl, but not to your furry pets or to you. That said, you might find some on your skin (I found mites on me after having handled a pullet who had them... bleck!), but the bugs can't survive on you.

Dust your birds, coop, and roosts with Seven 5% dust, which you can get at any store that carries garden supplies. Do a search on BYC for "Seven dust" and see the tips that people have for usage.

It's OK!! You and your chickens will be fine.
