They had 13 Cornish Cross Broiler chicks on clearance for $1 each - I could not resist. I went back 5 hours later and got them. I think my husband is going to freak out! I was so glad I got them - they are so sweet and they had no water left or feed in the pen so they were very happy when I put them in the brooder with fresh electrolyte water and starter - now they have full tummies and are all stretched out sleeping

yay! i went to TSC the other day and could hardly resist buying some - i have an order in w/Welps and they wont be here until june 15..... i cant wait! i am jealous - have fun!

I had actually wanted to purchase some broilers at the beginning of the month but my incubator was full and then they didn't pip and hatch on day 21 - it was into day 23 before most of them that were going to zip came out and the rest died in the eggs

and I just didn't have it in me to spend my time on meaties back then but today... oh boy... I'm gonna be in trouble when hubby comes home...

Oh to convince him of all the grilling and frying and broasting and baking and yummy chicken pot pie....

They really were a good deal! I got twice as many for the same amount of money I would have spent anyway!

And hubby wasn't mad at all.... he just said... "I guess we better start eating more chicken."

I asked him if he was upset and he just said, "What am I supposed to say? You already have them."

And then I said I was going to learn to process them myself and he thinks I should not - he said for $2 per bird, let the Amish lady do it

because that is cheap!

I was sure someone said TSC was done getting chicks in and they told me this afternoon they just got a new shipment of red sex link pullets today.

Funny thing - this young girl about 14 was looking into the tank of chicks (pretty crowded too) and said to me, "Excuse me. Do you know anything about chickens?" And I said, "Yes I do" (like I was a real authority since nobody else was around....) and she pointed into the tank and said, "Do you think that one is dead?" I looked inside and saw a baby chick flat as a pancake laying there dead as 4 o'clock - it was obvious the other chicks had been laying on it and walking all over it all day (like nobody could tell it had died

) so I picked it out of the tank and put it in the waste basket behind the service counter.

I think the poor girl was traumatized

The chick was flat as a pancake. Do you think that one is dead?

I agree. TSC = bad place for me to go during chick days.... I gaze longingly into the brooders and think they would all be so much happier at my house!

And get this... hubby filled the waterer this morning for the baby chicks I brought home last night before I got up since he was leaving for work early - big hug to him - I think he is secretly becoming a chicken man
