I should probably introduce myself by now :)

Hello! I'm Cas : )

I live in the Pacific Northwest and have owned chickens for somewhere in 6-7 years now. I ventured into pigeons 4 years ago, we owned a duck for a summer (before deciding he'd be happiest at our friends few acres) and for a year in the middle on top of pigeons and chickens we also owned some coturnix quail and then a few bobwhite which we raised to sell.

I was part of 4H poultry in my county for I believe 4-5 years, my greatest achievement during that time was getting Reserve Grand Champion of my fair's poultry, (grand champ was a handsome duck, so I like to think my cochin gal was the best chicken ;D) Most of our flock is the older ladies who we got near the beginning, my showbirds were rehomed to someone still in 4H since I aged out (20y now) but we still have some really sweet birds, even if a few are older and crotchety! (We got one of each- Cochin, Easter Egger/RIR, Barnevelder, Bantam Cochin, Smooth Silkie, Bearded Silkie, OEGB, Bantam Leghorn, Bantam Cochin/Bantam EE, Bantam Easter Egger, Polish, D'Anver, and a Easter Egger/Marans(?), all hens, no roosters for the first time ever)

I also did 4H with pigeons, I own a few breeds but I am on a halt from breeding and trying to downsize cause quarantine has been a little rough on budget, the breeds I am keeping are Birmingham Rollers (specifically almond, blue spread and a blue bar pied, plus possibly a few rec red grizzles) a pair of Damascenes (both barred) a pair of chinese owl pigeons (blue spread, but both carry non-spread :D!!) a pair of oriental rollers (almond & rec red) a handful of Portuguese tumblers (various colors & grizzles) a few homers (blue t-checker, but I'm gonna sell these guys :'c) and lastly I've got a pair +1 of ringneck doves :D

I hope to one day have a farm. My ideal property would be 5+ acres, chickens, ducks, quail, rabbits, possibly some turkeys or geese, and of course a dog and a cat, some fish tanks if I can have the extra time : ) I love animal genetics, art/drawing, and I love farm life, hopefully one day I can afford to live out in the country, but for now it's nice to be able to have chickens and pigeons and a few fishtanks, they help during this crazy times : )
Hello Nice to meet You!

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people!

Thank you all!! :D

I bought several homing pigeons once, but I think I got ripped off. they all flew back to their original owner! Oh well, live and learn!

Yeah that can happen with older birds! Unfortunate, but that reason I've been told to only get squabs/babies and train them to your flock, or to not fly adult ones, the cock bird of mine is a retired race bird (his owner/breeder told me he's placed pretty high in statewide races!) But I keep him in, flying around my large loft cause I'm pretty sure even after a year and a half he'd fly home! :D (plus we have families of hawks and a family of bald eagles who live in my neighborhood :0 )

Sounds like a good variety of experience. never knew people raised pigeons! How is that experience going?
Hello and welcome!

It's been pretty good! I've had a few bumps but what's experience without a few bumps! :D I love them even if some I have are little turds, they're a unique bird, fun and fairly simple to keep! :D I love their genetics and the fact that you can keep more than one boy, being limited to one rooster isn't the most fun in chickens haha
