We are trying to capure and kill a rat living in our garage....he seems to be a smart rat. Now that we know rats are around, I am wondering if they are a threat to our chickens (barred rocks, buff orpintons, light bramahas etc)? I think my coop is secure, but one never knows!

They can be a threat to chicks.

The main problem with rats is the damage they can do to buildings with their constant gnawing on things, which they must do as their front teeth grow continueally.

If you have them in numbers they can do a number on the feed bill as well if feed is not stored in rat proof containers.

They can also spread disease but what wild animal can't.

If it is a large wood or wharf size rat, it can be a threat to your chickens as well...most certainly any chicks or bantams.

A safe way to get rid of one...put out a small shallow dish with a can of soda pop poured in it at night. Rats cannot belch and the carbonation will kill them.

The downside is that the stink to high heaven when they die and they can die in the most awkward places. Try a live trap with bait.

Good luck.
