Does duck x goose hybrid exist? I have read many times in articles of hybrid waterfowls. Saying it's not possible for the two to hybridize. Well, a while back, when I was a young kid, 13 years ago, so no pictures at the time, calming tube rafting on a lake in Central CA. I saw a mallard male duck with what looked like a greylag goose female, it's not the domestic forms, since it was very slim and only about twice the size of the mallard drake. Well, what was interesting was that, they had a little family of 5 gosling/duckling hybrid together trailing their every move in the water. These were not small gosling/duckling, they were almost as big as their goose mother. So a little bigger than the mallard drake. I know they are for sure goose, as I was rafting right next to them and they were trying to get a way, but just swam along the bank and never flown, since I figure, even though the babies were that large(almost fully feather/grown), they were not fully flight ready yet. I follow the little family of 7, for about 35 minutes, trying to get close, but only got about 10', before they swam further into the bank and my raft couldn't float that close over water of that low level. Then, I just stop following them after that 35 minutes, and they continue swimming happily as a family up the lake.
........almost forgot to mention, there were only this single pair at the whole lake the entire summer. I saw the same family 3x that summer, when they first hatch as little fluff balls, when they were 2 weeks and last time, when they were almost full grown with their parents. These weren't dumped either(the lake was in the mountains in the country side), or at least they don't seem like it and don't look like the squat robust domestic form of either breed. The very first time, I actually saw them at the lake, was in the spring, they had just flown in together. So, that's actually 4x, wish, I would have taken pictures of them, so you guys could have seen them. At the time, I wasn't into poultry of any kind, but being raise on a farm, I knew what ducks and geese looked like, including wild and domestic forms.
So ? is, have any one seen or know of a goose x duck hybrid that exist, or if you own one and would like to share pictures, I would love to see them, please? Haven't read/heard, seen pictures or mentions of one, since spotting that hybrid at the mountain lake 13 years ago.
