I started converting my shed into a coop

lol Thank you. I let them out of the run early today, because it's supposed to be real hot again today and I wanted them to have time to forage in the cooler morning temps.

As you said, it puts them in a higher risk category but the free ranging is good for them. It's also good for me, because I can watch them working their way around the house, and that's a huge part of why I got them.

When I was changing the water in the coop this morning, I heard a little *peep*. Eventually I saw a little head under my sitting hen;

I finished up the brooder I'd made on top of the nest boxes, and made the move. There are still four unhatched eggs, but she gathered them over a few days so I didn't expect them all to hatch at once.

She settled right in, once she saw the eggs and baby.

None of the eggs were hers, so there are three options to what the chicks could be. I'm anxious to see what I get.

Chick #2 hatched sometime during the night, and it's a black one.

Poppa kept an eye on me while I was putting the starter feed in, and taking the pics;

Beautiful! I love pictures of broodies and their chicks. They will be wonderful to watch. I have a broody right now with 3 three-week old chicks, and I love seeing her care for and teach them. I have developed a new respect for her and hope she will hatch out a brood for me each year.

Congratulations!

I've been slacking on the pic taking, so I took a couple with my cell phone today. Another hen has started laying, so now I'm getting five eggs per day, and there are three chicks hatched out and hopping around.

They're quickly outgrowing their little pen, but the new spot for them is almost done. I should be moving them sometime next week.
