Hello to all you new advisers and lovers of chickens. I truly did come across you by accident as I was searching the internet for help with my unwell 'girl' -Isa Brown.
My name is Noni, 69 and have had chickens for 16 years. Neighbors hang their scraps over my fence and gate and in turn they receive eggs - occassionally.
Am so glad to find a website like this and will be recommending to two of may gal friends who have a backyard family of 'girls'. No roosters allowed in this built up area of Lemon Tree Passage.

Can you help me please.
Today I noticed that one of my chickens was hardly able to walk - wing hanging down to help her hobble and then she would flop down. And I also noticed that she had diarrhea. Comb is flopped over - a little. She seemed perfectly ok yesterday.
It's the pad underneath - swollen and hot. Nothing in foot, not cut
She's keen to eat and drink.
What to do?

Greetings from Kansas and ! Happy you joined us but sorry about your sick hen. In terms of the foot issue - it kind of sounds like bumblefoot. That could be causing the other symptoms. Here's a link that contains two articles about bumblefoot.

It can be a bear to treat but I've done a little bumblefoot surgery on a couple of chickens so I know it's possible.

Bumblefoot was my first thought also...I did surgery on 3 of my girls for it. I think there may be less invasive ways of treating it but the surgery worked well for my girls (the problem was immediately taken care of and they healed well). The ER folks will be a lot of help in identifying if it's bumble or something else.

Thank you Golden Feather for your referrals and help re bumblefoot. I have done the dastardly surgery and it's now 10 days later and foot has healed but my girl's foot is still swollen and she will not put it down. She's learned to use her wings for balance and hops. But most of the time she will not move our of the layer box. Her diarrhea has gone and she is eating a small amount and drinking. I have been giving her a liquid vitamin C in a syringe to fight any general infection. She's so adorable and responsive.
I wonder if it is something else altogether!!! Maybe her foot is fractured? Who knows? What to do? It is too much money to have a consult with the local vet. Maybe it is time to put her to sleep.
