"I swear, I only walked into the feed store for dog food and things just got a bit out of control..."

Hello BYC!

Two springs ago, I walked into a feed store in early March looking for dog food and brought home 6 chicks and 3 ducklings. We did not have a coop or run or anything close to it but the next weekend my husband ordered up an excavator and, with the help of our son, they put up a coop & run over several weeks.

Last summer (and because of chicken math) we doubled the size of the run and built some small duck and goose coops and added Sebastopol geese, runner ducks, Welsh Harlequin ducks and more chickens to our flock. In addition to the ducks and geese, we currently have salmon faverolles, a buff brahma, lavender Orpingtons, speckled Sussexes, araucanas, olive eggers, silver laced Wyandottes, Columbian rock cross, and copper Marans. One night this winter, the ducks and geese crashed the chicken slumber party in the big house and have made it clear to us that they’re not leaving, so this spring we'll build a second larger chicken coop at the other end of the run to give the chickens a bigger space plus some storage and an isolation/new chicken area.

We had no idea how much we would enjoy these funny feathered creatures and how they would quickly become such a big part of our life. We also love learning about the best ways we can care for them and new ways to keep them happy and healthy. There's always something new to discover and it's one of the reasons we joined BYC. We've also had so much fun designing and building our "chicken palace complex" and interacting with our birds, as well as all the other people we've met either in person or via social media. So much fun that we've started a coop construction business this year. We design and build coops and enclosures and will soon begin to offer ready-made coops and garden structures online and at local farmers’ markets.

Our home was built in 1775 so there's always something that needs fixing up or an old discovery that we're making, like glimpses of old wallpaper behind an antique radiator or buried treasure in the yard like bits of pottery and old glass bottles. Living in an antique home means we always have something on our to-do list. In the warm weather months, we love nothing more than spending some time in our vegetable garden and enjoying a glass of wine while the birds are pottering around us. We call that special hour "goose o'clock" and you know you'll find us up at the patio next to the run and duck pond.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you!
