we have an acre but its in the city. we can't let our chickens free range(until we get a fence $$) nor can we have any other farm type animals. i would love to have some goats and a llama or two not to mention 10-20 more chickens.
I love it, but all the work that goes into having more property isn't for everyone. We DO NOT have a huge farm by any means though. Almost 6 acres is not huge. But we spend most of our summer with gardens, lawn, brush cutting, canning, freezing, and the chickens now. Just mowing takes almost a whole day. Maybe one day you can move and get some more land.
We wished for this place sooo fervently. On paper it looked so perfect! Except in 4 years we have not been able to lick our persistent soil problems. We are beginning to suspect that we have some kind of soil contamination issue. Produce grown directly in our soil is undersized and tastes awful and bitter. Stuff we grow in containers of purchased potting soil grows like a dream. Plus our pastures grow weeds so dense that they smother out all the grass seed we have planted. In four years we have mowed, limed, fertilized, and seeded the main pastures every spring and fall (at a couple of grand each time) plus mowed in between. They should be lush and instead they look like "welcome to hard times". This place is a heart-breaker. At times I cannot find my horses out there because the weeds are so tall!
So, please be careful of what you wish for and try to be satisfied with what you've got. THAT was our biggest mistake. The old place was perfect--just smaller than what we thought we wanted. I'd go back there in a heartbeat. Except it was broken into several smaller places and now has 4 houses on it. No more pastures and no more gardens.
The grass is NOT always greener even when it looks like it is.
Again it may not be all it's cracked up to be.... We have 60 acres 30 already pastures. They are not fenced in and I want Dexters or goats. DH has dragged his feet about the animal thing. Oh and it takes DH all day to mow the grass.
hee hee hee i have to pitch in too..... sometimes i long for the days of a small city lot.....
this is a LOT of work - not that i'm complaining. but wow! and there is no 'take out' here ... its whatever i 'take out' of the freezer and make for dinner. sometime i really wish for the delivery guy but he just aint comin' this far out.
and we are the last people to get our electric turned back on if there is a storm. those pool souls in city who's house got down to 60* and they are likely to die? HA! i'm out there busting up water and hauling it for the critters and trying to keep everyone warm!
but, as i sit here with a huge amount of cream in my coffee and a big ol cinnamon rol.... the great thing is that you dont have to have a gym membership - the bad thing is that you feel your age just a little more every day.
love where you are at. imagine where you can be. move in that direction and be happy!!!
i do love where i am. i need my convenience of stores/carry out/fast food but i would like to have more space/privacy. i think 5-8 acres on the outskirts of town would be fine.
