Do we live in the same place???

Last fall we had power outtages due to the hurricanes coming up the east coast. We had no power for a WEEK! Thankfully it wasn't freezing, but was still cool.

Kids thought it was great because we were "camping out" daily. Slept in the house, cooked over an open fire 3 meals a day (and on the grill) but we had to cook up everything that was in the freezer the first two days!!

We were the last to get our electric back on...only have dial up internet accessible to us, no DSL period!

Can't get more than 3 tv channels at any one time, even with the switch to digital (that's soo much better!)

We have 2.5 acres that we have to PUSH MOW! We've no riding mower, so it takes us 2-3 days to get everything completely mowed. By the time we've completely mowed, it's time to start over mowing again.

this is a LOT of work.

love where you are at. imagine where you can be. move in that direction and be happy!!!

This is great advice.

AMEN! I love it, but our 150 acres is a lot of work! And we live on miles of dirt roads that turn to mud like magic. Dont ever plan on having a clean car again. Oh and they dont plow dirt roads in the winter till someone calls to say "Um my kids cant get to the bus stop!"
Then you gotta remember that theres usually a 2 acre yard to mow, and planting/harvest always happen RIGHT when the Fair, Family reunions, and the best lake weather happen. I love it but its not all peaches and cream! I think the 2 reasons I dont LEAVE are that my kids can play outside safely and that we dont have any ordinances about animals..I think I could have a giraffe and not get in trouble.

Be happy with your acre .. we sold our house, moved into an apt and now can't get a construction loan to build our "farm" ..

I have ZERO acres .. ZERO yard ... ZERO chickens...

... but we enjoy the pool ? ! ?

We have 2.11 acres and its perfect. For us, the size of property wasnt so important as the location. We are the last house in the holler and so privacy is not an issue.

We've just learned to Bloom Where We Are Planted

our neighbors are a little bit of my problem. the people to the left are seriously lame. they have a large dog that barks all the time. it would be nice if i could take out the trash without having to listen to a dog 15 feet away barking as loud as a train. not to mention he just stalks our chickens from his yard. they care very little for the look of their yard and that bothers me and the mother is nosey and annoying. i think i'm mostly longing for privacy.

we are outlined in red and the coop is in blue

I have lived in a nice new home on an 80'x120' lot in a small neighborhood, on a 1 acre lot in another small neighborhood, base housing, apartments/duplexes, AND with my mother. I ended up in a trailer on 3 acres and I can tell you I am happier now with what I have and where I live than at any other place I have ever lived. It is extremely hard work to keep up the 1.5 acres that I mow and keep my flower beds, veggie garden, and chicken complex on, but it's just perfect for me. The other 1.5 acres is woods and a stream that cuts through the back of the property...and it's pretty hairy back there. At 57 years old, I work full time, don't stop day or night and rarely have time to do anything but keep my place up, but truthfully, I can't think of anything else I would rather be doing, and if I can find time to grab a tall glass of iced tea with a lemon wedge and sit down for 15 minutes in my flower bed area, I am happy as a pig in a poke! I guess the secret is to do what you enjoy and at the same time you accept your limitations. People think I'm out of my mind with all these chickens and the obsessive need to plant things or build things, but it's just how I am and it's what makes me happy. Don't worry..be happy..and remember - Rome wasn't built in a day and if your place is not 100% as quick as you want it to be...well...tomorrow is another day.
