i swear you people with your big farms make me sick

Despite all the hard work that goes along with it I feel very fortunate to have the size farm that we do. I know a lot of people on here would consider it large, but in comparison to what some of our neighbors farm it isn't. The part of the farm we inherited has been in our family since 1882 and the rest we have accumulated over the last 35 years by saving every last penny we could, doing without a lot of things that some people consider necessities, and investing what we saved in more farm ground instead of a retirement fund.

Maybe you're looking in the wrong place to get a loan?!? We make $37,000 a year and got approved for a $130,000 mortgage to buy an acre and a nice house in the country, in addition to the $100,000 loan we already have on our current house which we were going to rent out. (Decided to sell it instead of renting it though...)

The only thing that sucks now is that they don't do the 80% mortgage and 20% mortgages to let you get around that stupid PMI payment if you don't have 20% to put down. When we bought the house we're currently selling, we had it set up so we didn't have to pay for PMI but now they changed the rules so that it's not possible and we have an extra $80 on our mortgage payments each month.

I have 4.5 acres. But this year I have done NOTHING with it at all.
I have mowed. That's it. It has been one thing after the next since Jan. People sick, people hurt, etc. So I have 4 acres of nothing, not even a small garden, not even a tomato plant in a pot.
It makes me

I can't wait till next year. Fresh start.

I have green envy. When people post pictures with green grass and trees, I wish it was me. My backyard has some grass and trees thanks to a horrendous water bill, but beyond my yard, it is a world of dirt and rocks.

When I look at my neighborhood on Google Earth, my yard is the only one with any greenery. The rest are all dirt and rocks. Living in the desert can be a pain sometimes.

But we never have snow or ice.

I've been living on our six acres for a little over a year and a half. I'd say it's just about the perfect size property. I do plan to buy another lot thats 10 acres someday, but the same family has been holding onto it for about 50 years, so I'm not in a rush. They have no intentions of building or selling it, it's safe. I only want the added 10, so I can someday have more animals (like I need them, see sig.).

200 years ago our house was the homestead for a several hundred acre farm. I'd love to return it as much as possible to its original state, one project, and one lot at a time.

The biggest shock moving here was getting used to being in a home where the kitchen is bigger than our entire apartment in NY was. After that, it's all the work. I mow three days a week. I different section each day. There is always something that needs attention out there, and I won't even get started on the inside of the house. Although they've gotten better, the power and phone when I first moved here were sure to go out at least once a week, and after the ice storm last December I had neither for over a week. I did get a small generator that helped out, but if it weren't for wood heat, and a well that's about 500 up the hill from the house (ahh gravity!) for water I don't know what I would have done.

Overall, having the property is great, but it sure is a lot of work!

For those who enjoy the greenery.

>AngieChick - The pond in the left that photo became a large ice rink last winter. I set up sprinklers to thicken it to over 2ft of ice, and I'd blow the snow off it after each storm. All my neighbors kids thought I was nuts. But who says adults can't have a little fun?

And here is a photo for the snow lovers. This was the house when I moved in. Ughh.

backdoorchicken-

I wish my yard was as big as yours! You have about 2.5 times more land than we do. And we pay $1580 a month on the mortgage!

How come ya got the chickens so far away?
