I Think I Discovered Something Most Of You Probably Already Knew

I think your increased production has more to do with the fact that it's spring so the egg season is upon us. Every hen and her sister is going to be feeling the urge. There's a reason why eggs figure so prominently at Easter.

.....Alan.

Thanks for all of the replies. I may bug them several times today to see if it make a difference.

It is possible. In one pen I have 7 RIR and 7 Loman Browns. most days I get around the 16 - 18 eggs. Ive noticed its the lowman browns that will lay twice.

If your hens are very nervous when you're around, then perhaps you're right, but it's probably because they're just settling into their new home.

My 3 hens don't care at all if I'm out there watching them get all clucky and fussy in the nest - they've laid eggs right in front of me lots of times.

I feed and water twice a day. Each time, when I'm finished, I check for eggs.

Egg Production is picking up due to Spring coming on (warmer, longer days).

Also, I think that a higher protein feed promotes egg-laying.

(In Winter, I feed a lot more "scratch" , cracked corn, whole milo, etc. to promote more "warmth" for the birds.)

IF I see a hen in a nest, I don't bother to check for eggs until later.

i was begining to think the same thing i have 6 rsl they started laying last week i have been checking for eggs 3- 4 times also. on the first day 1 egg 2 day no eggs 3 4 5 6 day 1 egg each day so since i have seen ur thread i will try the once a day look what time do u go out at should it be late in the afternoon today i got an egg at 10 am so hopefully mabey get another one later on. but tomorrow i will try once a day i have had mine 6 1/2 weeks now so they are not afraid of me fingers crossed for another one today though

I have lock mine in their coop and then let them out in the mornings. I check for eggs after they have roosted and I'm locking the coop. This way I don't have to worry about other animals stealing them at night.

I can't say "for sure"...BUT, it seems to me that my hens lay their eggs mostly between 10 AM and 2 PM (MST).

P.S. I'll be changing my chicken yard/coop arrangement this Spring. I'm seriously considering using "homemade" Trap-Nests.
It will depend upon how I divide up the pen area...I'd like to know which hens are laying and laying best/biggest eggs.

I can't imagine that a chicken would NOT lay an egg that is in the works. They do like their privacy, but when the rubber hits the road, a chicken's gotta do what a chicken's gotta do, ya know what I mean?
