Follow up, SO reminded me that rats can eat their toesies if so inclined so I made them a box.Okay so question. Momma hen is on mesh outside like 4 ft off the ground, low of 41. Obviously that's not going to insulate the way she thinks it will, but will she shift onto the cardboard on her own if the babies get cold or do I need to move her? I moved her last night.
yep they decided to sleep in a pen I'm not really using (storage & as a roof over a feeder) so I just shut them in there til morning. she only has 5. she was very unhappy when I sold 8 of them.Did she get them all home again?
Broody girls are quite challenging, like us they are moody and determined. I had one this year and she stuck with it till the chicks were 3 weeks and she was done. When they couldn't follower her back into coop she left them . So keep and eye on the babys..This morning one of my loose hens was standing on a downed tree branch, feathers all puffed up and tail spread, just looking royally pissed off. When I put out fresh food (feeder ran out over night), she stayed puffed up and ate quickly, qorked at all the other chickens she passed, ran over to the water (that hadnt been empty) and gulped it down. A gust of wind blew leaves at her and she ran off, and she was foraging farther away, not with any of the rest of the flock. I was stalking her but I didnt want to drive her farther from the nest so I backed off and then lost track of her. I also may have found a broody poop - no pic because my dog ate it. Ew.
I couldn't find the nest but I'll stalk her tomorrow morning and see what happens.
