She's a pretty black duck with a crest and a very small, irregular bib. Beautiful, but not fitting any breed standard. Not a Cayuga and not a Swedish. But it doesn't matter - she doesn't need a breed name anyway, just her own personal name
I'd def say there's some Cayuga in there for sure!
Looks *alot* like my little 4 1/2 week old duckling....minus the white. Pekins were my favorite ducks until I got that sweetheart. Definitely a cutie! I want a little crested beauty so bad now after looking at all the various cresteds around the forum! They look like they have funny little sunday hats on.
I've kept Cayugas, and blue Swedish. Blue Swedish throw black Swedish. So, you may have been informed correctly, but yours is a black Swede off a blue.
I've also had crested black Swedish (I really like those).
I only keep Cayugas now. Just sold the last of my blue Swedes last month.
The terrific black feet are the only thing that throw me for a Swedish.
My final opinion is this: it's a poor quality Black Swedish, Blue Swedish, or Cayuga, but it's a fabulous looking duck! So, what's it matter in the end? It's a duck to be enjoyed, but probably not a duck to breed.
Cayuga I bet. we have blue swedish and cayuga plus a few, and here I baby pics of one of the blue swedish and one of the cayuga as babies.
My blue swedish-one has a nice solid white chest and my other has speckles, like the black swedish posted earlier by ducklover1. I hear that the blue will have a possible black offspring and that is normal, as they are a cross anyway. It is all confusing. Look for the green, that will confirm it.
Some cayuga have white spots, and I hear they are simply not show quality, that is all.
One of my cayuga girls now has a bad foot, swollen and hot, and she is lethargic. I am sure she is not laying, and I have been searching on the site to see what may be the issue.
She may have scratched herself on a nail, I found a board with a rusty nail sticking up.....poor girl.
Darn it, can't remember how to post a pic! I uploaded two baby pics...I will keep trying. (my goodness, this is annoying...LOL)
I have a black Cayuga from Ideal that was all black until her last baby molt. Then she developed white around her neck. Now this spring, she has a good bit of white around her neck and she lays a light gray egg.
Only one of my Cayuga from Ideal laid a almost black egg to start with. Since we wanted black eggs we just ordered hatching eggs from a breeder. We don't mind the eggs turning gray through the season but they should at least start out dark or black.
What sells me most for Cayuga is she is green in the sunlight. In the first 2 pics I put up you can't see it but now she is almost always emerald. Will take new pics today so you can see the green.
