I think I have a hen that thinks she’s a rooster.

Sooo today I was in my yard and I brought in the rooster back to the back yard because at night we bring him in so he doesn’t crow to early. I let them all walk around together and everything was fine when they where in the yard. When they went In there hotel coop with the large run that takes up 50% of my yard, for a few min everything was fine. Than all of a sudden the rooster walks past a hen that usually chest bumps him and they go there separate ways. This time she jumps up and kicks him really hard. He falls down and rolls though the sand, as she keeps kicking him he gets up and there both kicking each other. I tried to brake up the fight it only lasted a minute and they walked away. But I don’t understand what happened and that hens would really start a fight with a rooster like that. Has anyone heard of this behavior?

Mira just crazy to me because he didn’t even look at her or make any noise, and he didn’t even do the wing matting dance.

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

How old are you birds and how big is the flock? What breed hen and rooster?

Yes sometimes a hen will whoop up on a boy. Some hens even crow. :barnie And my friend has several old hens with spurs.

By removing him nightly... maybe you are upsetting the pecking order??

I also suspect mistaken identity of this "hen"... but one thing for sure... the more birds I keep the more unexpected things I see! :pop

How old is this 'hen'? Can you attach some photos? Hens can sometimes act like roosters..but I have a feeling it might be a cockerel. :)
She’s between 3 and 5 years old, she was one of 5 hens we got from a persons house. The thing is I’m not 100% how well of a condition they lived in because they where terrified of humans and where scared to step out in the sun. We’ve had them for almost a year. I’ve actually seen a egg come out of her so I’m sure she’s a hen

I completely see what your saying about removing him from the flock at night. The thing is we have a neighbor that complains about everything every chance she gets. We’ve been removing him at night so he doesn’t crow in the morning. In the afternoon he’s completely fine and doesn’t crow at all. I’ve been going though this process for a while and I think I know what I did wrong. Usually they are free ranged first and they walk around in the yard together and than we put them in the chicken hotel enclosure And there fine. Today I had some issues I had to take care of and ended up taking them out of there routine. And I know what some of you guys are thinking That I should rehome him. The thing is I’ve tried but he’s a very small silkie and no farm around me wants to take him because of his size, or there worried that other roosters they have will kill him and they don’t want to take responsibility. The think is this hen has kicked every rooster we had. I ended up having to rehome 5 others.
