I think I have a hen that thinks she’s a rooster.

Yes. My head hen put the boots to my rooster one day. I don't know why but she bloodied his comb pretty good.

He didn’t look hurt just tired and went along with doing his thing.

The thing is I’ve tried but he’s a very small silkie and no farm around me wants to take him because of his size, or there worried that other roosters they have will kill him and they don’t want to take responsibility. The think is this hen has kicked every rooster we had. I ended up having to rehome 5 others.

My large fowl hens will whoop up on Silkie boys easy... all day long if they try mating especially. None of my large fowl hens deem them worthy or will submit in pecking order to bantam boys. If your other roosters were also Silkie cockerels they may not have counted as roosters in the hens mind. In other words, yes that's completely normal behavior. I used to breed Silkies and see free boys (especially Silkies) all day long on craigslist.. So I completely understand how hard it can be to find a new home for them. Maybe keep trying (if that's what you want and he is well mannered enough) to find a home using the pet or farm/garden section. Patience is key and renew your ad on occasion, knowing that if another home is right it will come along at exactly the right time. I have re-homed a few to young boys who were interested in showing at their local fair.

I re-homed them to freezer camp mostly though instead of trying to give away or sell my extras (part of responsible hatching when you breed. ) I do offer a great life every day still and they have one bad moment that's over quickly. Believe it or not they present perfectly well on the table, given the opportunity.

Sorry you have a problematic neighbor, they can be the worst. It's great that you are working hard to give this cockerel (soon to be rooster) a good life AND be a good neighbor as well! Sounds like you are also trying to give those hens a good life.

I understand what you are doing and why, I was just brain storming possible reasons for the hens behavior. (If she's molting per her stated age, maybe she's extra crazy!) There are some threads on here about how to dampen the rooster sound, if you haven't already seen them... in case something might work (better) for you.

If you want to keep a rooster with your flock, and she has caused problems with all of them, maybe it's time to rehome HER.
