hello,

Well for curiosity I put an coturnix quail egg ( not fertile ) in vinegar, after half a minute- 1 minute the egg turned from a dark egg to a white one!!! And then I tried to candle and you could see it easier!!!! Could this work on fertile ones without killing them? Just when they arrive pop them quickly in vinegar and get them out and incubate, but there is a downside to it, since vinegar is so strong wouldnt it have sort of boiled the egg inside?

Thanks,

I find I can candle coturnix ok with a very small LED torch - it just has one bright white LED bulb in the end and the diameter would be only about 5mm (is that about 1/5 in?). I don't see much detail but what I do see is the contrast between the air space where light is passing through freely and the embryo area which appears dark. Dud eggs the light transmits through brightly. I can also sometimes pick up failed embryos by spotting the "brown ring of death" but it does depend on the degree of colour and texture of the eggshell
PS I got the torch from an electronics store sold as a keychain torch, runs off watch batteries.
