Well Jen it didn't last long.

She hasn't been on there all day, even after the others laid their eggs. So I took the eggs and opened them and they were all fertile, that was the good thing!!

I think that for some chickens, broodiness is like a science that can't be tampered with (in the chicken's mind) So when two of mine went broody at the same time this spring, I left them in their chosen nests and left them to decide when to get off to eat and drink and socialize with their flock. Nobody tried to hurt their eggs while they were off.

One problem was that other hens would go in and lay their non-fertile eggs in with the fertile eggs we had bought (yes, even though there were FOUR other Empty nests available!) so I took pink nail polish and dabbed a mark on the fertiles. Every day I would have to count eggs and remove any unmarked extras.

The only way that I bothered the broodys was to candle. And I mean a LOT. To the point that my boyfriend would get nervous and think the chickens would no longer accept the eggs. They had no problem though and the hatch was fairly successful, 8 out of 12 possibles.

We have two broody hens right now, one has two pips as of today!

The other one's eggs are due to hatch next Thursday/Friday!

Everyones getting broodies! I make sure my girl is getting enough water and food. I have a foodand water dish right next to her. I also go out and give her water with a small animal waterbottle which she loves to drink out of. She's got maybe 2 weeks to go. I didn't keep track woopsies...

I'm really on my last nerve with this showgirl rooster... He keeps trying to roost/mate with her in her box. I'm about to ring his neck arggggggggg!!!

yodercountrygirl - I'm sorry to hear it didnt work out. My wyandottes are pretty picky too. I have a variety and they seem to be the most stubborn but alot of fun and very friendly.
