I think I'm addicted to candling!

Then you need the LED Lenser. You can buy it at home depot. I candled my VERY DARK marans eggs with them.

Am I an enabler?

Yes actually, you are.

Welcome to the party!!!!

So do you have one of the big ones, or one of the smaller ones? I have one that is the size of a car's cigarette lighter (designed to charge there) so it doesn't require any sort of shield to point the light into the egg. But it's not strong enough for the marans eggs either.

But I DO know where Home Depot is and I need to get more parts for another bator so... Fieldtrip!

On my blue eggs near the air sac I can see veins on most

..... My white eggs are duds I think ( I only have 3 ).... My browns I am still unsure, they are really really dark, not marans though.... But I was reading in the post that you aren't supposed to turn the eggs upside down

, when I am candling a flip them all over!!!!!!

........ I really hope I haven't caused too much damage .... This first incubation is truly a learning curve.... I did open up a gazzillion eggs from the fridge last night & all but one were fertile, including my duck eggs, I thought I only had girl ducks... SURPRISE

If you're rolling them slowly to get a look you probably won't hurt a thing. Don't flip fast, fast or hard is going to damage blood vessels. They get rolled and tucked and shifted all the time by a hen.

I am still candling often because there's more I want to learn, even if there is some risk to the eggs, of which I'm not certain. But I do know there is benefit in figuring out development and in candling skills in general. You can't get better at observation unless you practice.

I ordered an LED penlight today and got a card in my email... LOL

Right now I have a broken egg with wax that I am checking every couple of days. He's due the 9th ish... since I'm not really sure when the hen started really sitting the eggs. I'm also keeping very close tabs on two double yolkers in there just out of abject curiousity.

I wash my hands thoroughly before I touch them at all. Hoping it's NOT me when an egg goes to bloodring or bacterial contamination.

Luck to you all.

I made a run to town the other day and grabbed one of these LED Lensers, it is SUPER BRIGHT!!!! Ware still playing with the "Perfect" way to contain the light as the lens of the light is just a bit bigger that the end of the egg. But we can definately see life in the marans eggs.

I am on day 13. I have 24 eggs that were shipped. I am new at this so I keep feeling like I need to double check. I have removed 12 eggs so far 8 were clear 2 had blood rings and one stopped developing on day 6.

I am pretty sure 10 eggs are doing well

1 I am not sure about. See just saying that makes me want to check. I think I will try to wait till lock-down to candle again to be sure but it does make me feel better to see movement. I can't stop thinking about it.

I would use gloves when you handle the eggs. Human oils are BAD for just about everything it touches. I bought a box of medical gloves that sit by the incubator. 20 days and counting here.
