I have been raising chicks for around four to five weeks and my chickens are finally starting to get all feathered! In these photos are some before and after photos. The chickens have gotten so big (as well as their poop) I was wondering if you guys think I should start on a coop and let them outside more, feel free to ask for better photos as my chickens are NOT photogenic still wondering what breed they are lol if anybody knows lemmie know the second to last photo is then grown up. They are wayyy bigger and are starting to get feathers on their heads

How old are they? When our chicks are about 3 weeks old we move them to an outdoor brooder that we can close if the weather gets cold or wet. Thay are starting to fly and also to get smelly! We have a red heat lamp in it so we can keep them warm at night and a white one, just in case it's needed if the days get chilly, but we use it less and less as they get more and more feathered.

Between six and eight weeks we start integrating them with the big girls in the big coop. You don't have an older flock, but at this age I would be putting them in the coop they are going to stay in. They won't need artificial heat any more. They may still cuddle together for companionship and warmth. Congratulations! You have a flock!

Our first chicks were hatched Jan 17 and at around 8 wks we moved them to the 10x10 coop area with a heat source because night temps went down into the 20s F. The 2nd batch were hatched Mar 17 and will go out at 4 wks in a brooder with heat for night temps for intro to older birds. I'm really not all that concerned about them integrating as they are all the same breed and color. This is a task I made for myself because I somehow forgot the rooster to hen ratio. Don't get all twisted about getting your coop up, think what you want and build, as stated above yesterday.:thumbsup

It's not the breed and color that matters when integrating, it's the age and strangeness. Chickens know each other by, I guess I would call it familiarity. When you add new ones, they recognize the new ones as "not belonging." They don't fit in with the existing group, they are the "new kids" at school. It takes a bit for everyone to find where they're going to fit in the social structure, even if they all look alike.
