I have been checking the last couple of days under my broody cuckoo Marans, looking for pips and there are three today. One chick looked like it got halfway out and died- it's not moving or breathing or anything. The shell looked like maybe it began hatching and got stepped on, but the chick looks fully and perfectly formed- who knows? So I should go remove it, right? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but there's not, like, some weird point in hatching where they become completely still and look dead, correct? I know, I know, it's dumb, but I'd hate to not give the little thing a chance if it has one. Things happen during hatching and I'm sure this one probably got squashed by an inexperienced broody (this is her first hatch) or by another hen getting on the nest if mama got off for a minute.
