with the coop almost finished and the ideas of what type of birds looking for, I've come up with three top choices.

thoughts and your picks of what you like please.

here are my top three. I could have searched through a hundred chickens, but, am trying not to complicate my life, haha.

Orpingtons (buff..........or..)
Plymouth Rocks (barred, white and black)
Sussex (buff, light)

what I'm looking for are good egg layers, including winter- I think the Sussex wins that.

friendly, able to put up with love and doting from a 7 and 5 year old..........???

hardy in winter.

or should I just get four of each, lol. that would make it easier.

I like the four of each idea...that way you won't feel like you should have made the "other" decision! I don't have any Sussex, to my neverending dismay, but I do have BRs and BOs. Of those two breeds, the Barred Rocks are my faves.

My vote is for the Barred Rocks, I love mine and they are great layers. I also want to warn you that the Light and Buff Sussex will be very expensive. You may want want to try Speckled Sussex, I have some of those and they are beautiful.

I absolutely vote Barred Rocks- mine lay all winter, are cold hardy, are like lap dogs, and have fabulous clownish personalities. They always want to be held.

It was 10 below for a week at a time on and off all winter, and they did great.
