I Think Jess is Dying... :(

I used to have tortoises (we rehomed them years ago). They will outlive us also.

And these things always happen at bad times. It's Saturday, so I can't do much until Monday. I'm still sick with a nasty, nasty sinus infection. I have a broody in broody jail in my bathroom and chicks in a brooder in my livingroom. I have a duck I'm treating for bumblefoot (again).

I really need to quit my day job.
If only we didn't have to have a day job. :hugs

If you call the number I gave you, they will send you a FedEx label for the bird - but then you'll need to euthanize yourself. (sad but part of the job of animal husbandry)
I sent mine by FedEx a few days ago.
If you are close, they usually have someone on 24/7 call if you deliver.

I will have her euthanized on Monday by the vet. I know I'm a wuss for not doing it myself. If the vet weren't an option, I would, for sure. And I am about 2 hrs from Davis. I've sent another bird there in the past. I used to run am academic leadership program there, so I'm super familiar with the campus. I may just drive her there myself. I'll see how I'm feeling Monday.

Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate everything you've shared. I needed confirmation that my gut instincts were right. I would probably still be undecided about what course of action to take.
❤️

I imagine I'll get used to this process. I have only been keeping chickens for 4 years, and this is only the second chicken I've had to face losing (outside of a shipping disaster). It is sad, but I know it's part of the whole chicken-keeping deal.

Partially relayed question:

I'll be having Jess necropsied, but what do other folks do with the bodies of their chickens who die of old age or disease? I imagine I won't have all of my birds necropsied when they die, and I don't eat meat.

I bury my chickens in our pet cemetery. I don't eat meat either.
