I noticed that my chicken (Silver Laced Wyandotte - 1 year) had alot of crusted poop on her and upon further inspection she has a very large intestine-like looking blob coming out of her vent. It is about the size of a walnut, quite large. I washed her behind with warm water but she seems to be in pain only when I was touching or cleaning it. She otherwise was wandering the yard fine. What could it be? and what should I do about it? I would post a picture but it looks pretty gross...any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My 4 day old chic had a covered vent and "bump" at his vent. Could this be prolapse and if so, what should i do?

It does sound like a prolapse - which is an emergency that has to be taken care of immediately. Think of it as part of her repro tract that has turned inside out and been pushed out of the body. It will quickly get infected. Worse, the other hens will peck it, which can cause death. Get her safely into isolation. Clean it up, and try to get it back in. You can read my account of what I did with my hen that prolapsed (who I saved, and went on to lay eggs for another couple of years) here:

BTW, chicklover, it's highly unlikely that's a prolapse. Clean it up (damp towel) and I bet the chick will be fine.

my chicken is making a weird noise when she breathes in. i've held her and looked her over and can't find anything amiss. she also has a hiccup sound. she has been walking around eating/drinking and acting normal. she and another hen "yelled" at one another for a while when they both went in to get in their nests. this chicken is young and is just getting ready to lay. no eggs yet.
