I figured it out last night. I woke up to check the incubator. Leo didn't want to come with me, so I knew all was well. I did coax him along anyway. When we went back to bed I watched him. Every now and then he would lift his head and listen. I think he listens to the slight clicking noise whent the light on the heating element goes on and off. I honestly think he knows about how often it should click on and off. When the pattern changes he tell me. I always knew that dog was a genius.
