I think my hen's vent is infected!!Update, found out what it is!!!!!

My vet even suggested that it may be parasites. However, about a month ago, I treated my flock with Wazine, than, 10 days later, with ivermectin . So I'm hoping I took care of any intestinal parasites.

I do know that I didn't use the eggs for 2 weeks after using the last wormer, the ivermectin. It was very hard throwing eggs away. I had to.......buy eggs at the store!!!!

I will give it a try. I only have 2 hens and so far only 1 has problem. It seems I can separate her for a week. The Valbazen seems to come up during search. What does Valbazen medication do?

I was wondering that too, but she doesn't fit the symptoms. She is very alert, great appetite, and her abdomen is not swollen or distressed in any way. When I feel around, everything feels normal. She definitely has some infection going on on the actual outer flesh part of her vent, just not sure what. I guess I am going to just keep doing what I am doing, and if it doesn't clear up on its own, figure out a way to get her to the vet. I refuse to cull her at this point. She is my absolute favorite girl, with the most awesome personality. She seems fine in all other aspects, so as long as she is not suffering, I will do what I can to figure this out. Thanks for all the replies so far. Just wish someone knew what this was.

I would say that if you think one hen has internal parasites, then both do. Valbazen is supposed to be an awesome wormer, and kills tape worms too, something many of the other wormers do not. I know many folks recommend worming your chickens with Wazine first. This paralyzes the adult worms, and they are expelled. Then about ten days later, you want to worm with a more heavy duty wormer, like Valbazen. Some feel that if you worm with the heavy duty stuff first, and your chickens are heavily infested, when the killed parasites leave the body it can cause major problems for your chickens, including death. Unless your one hen is showing signs of other stuff, I wouldn't see the need to separate them. Good luck

Wow, still, noone knows what this is.

I am leaning towards vent gleet, but would REALLY love some opinions. She seems to be the same, still eating and drinking ok, still has a yucky vent. It doesn't seem to smell as bad, but it still smells, so I know it is infected, just not sure of what kind of infection (fungal, bacterial). She has been real good about eating her yogurt, and she is also eating her layer crumbles, a little bit of BOSS and a little bit of cracked corn. I also have some "outdoor" grit available too. (sand and small pieces of gravel). I am checking her vent at least twice a day, making sure nothing is sticking to the yuck. She is so tolerant. Please, if you know what this is, I would REALLY love to hear from you. Thanks for everyone that gave me bumps, I really need to figure this out. I just wish I could afford to take her to the vet right now, but I just can't.

Thanks!

What are the chances this is a simple yeast infection that could be easily cleared up with an OTC medication like gynelotrimin? I would try that -- what's the worst that can happen? You'll know in a few days if it's helped or not.

When was the last time she laid an egg? Have you felt inside her vent (w/ surgical gloves, of course)? Might have an egg in her???

I'm pretty sure that vent gleet is the same as a yeast infection and the treatment you reccomend is the correct one. You're absolutely right, it won't hurt anything and the op should know in a couple of days if it's helping. I'd start there if it was my hen.

I would also soak or place hot/warm compress to the area several times a day. The heat increases circulation to the area which aids in healing. After drying apply the medication you choose. Good luck.
