I think my kids are enjoying this too much.... :)

I think it's awesome too, but as a newly reformed grocery store shopper, I have to say that the kids seem to handle the adjustment better than I am.

Yesterday as we were feeding, I told Thing 2 (he's 8) that I was planning to process the "McNuggets" soon. I asked him jokingly which ones we should roast up for dinner.

Imagine my shock (mixed with a tad of horror) as he objectively and calculatingly began assessing the chickens and after much thought pointed out a couple and said, "Those 2, because they are being mean to the other chickens and we can't have THAT."

LOL! Love it!

Kids are a surprising species

We hunt a lot here, and now whenever DD (3 y/o) sees a gun, she asks if we are going to shoot a deer or a turkey. She doesn't equate them to violence, only to hunting. Some folks shun the "homestead" culture, but ya know, if the you know what hits the fan, these kids will know more than most adults on how to make food

Lol. We processed our roo a few months ago. My daughter was gone at the time, but had no problem eating rambo. I was teasing her a few weeks later, telling her we cooked her silkie for dinner. All she asked was what part of rainbow she was eating. My 1 1/2 year old bites the chickens if she can catch them. I think she's tasting them.

Of course I have to watch her when we collect eggs too, she will try eating them shell and all straight out the chickens butt. She eats dirt too though....

This weekend during our annual Oklahoma poultry people get together we did a processing demonstration. I was most worried about those who do the pet chicken thing, and about the young children. What would they do when they saw the blood? I especially got worried when I saw bunches and bunches of the little ones on the very front rows.

I needn't have worried. They were the most attentive members of the audience. One little girl about 4 or 5 climbed up on a table right next to where I was doing the killing and plucking so she could get a better look.

Later that day I did a magic show for them and the preshow buzz was all about the magician and his bloody deeds of the morning. One little boy on my chopping technique... "He just took the chicken and WHACK! It was GONE!!!" I think that impressed them much more than my magic show.

Side note: when I pulled my first chicken out of the tub plucker one very young child shouted, "It's naked!"
