Or I scared her stiff, not sure which!

I've had this pair of hens (Partridge Rock and White Rock) for just over a week and have been trying to win them over with lots of treats and sweet talking, they love to talk back. I've tried petting them a few times and they've run away, so I haven't pushed the issue. Last night I was feeding them meal worms and the White Rock let me get my hand close enough to touch her- then she stopped eating, kind of hunched down a little bit, froze and let me pet her back.

Was that the squat I've seen everyone talking about? Does that mean she might lay for me soon? I'm dying to get some eggs, although I am enjoying these two hens quite a bit on their own. They are sweet funny little things and have learned very quickly that I come with meal worms, sunflower seeds and cracked corn when I talk to them every night.

Edited to add: When I got home from work tonight there was an egg waiting for me! Our 1st egg! I'm so eggcited!

I had a hen who used to do that for me, but I think it was just out of submission. She was a really docile chicken, but not very friendly. She would throw open her wings a bit, dip her head down, and squat there all rigid like, just like I'd see her do when a rooster was ready to mate. Or when a rooster walked past her. Like I said, she was really submissive.

Mine will stand still and let me pet their backs. When they squat they lower down, hold their wings out a bit, and stick their butt in the air. I usually ruffle the feathers on their back, they fluff up and shake off, then walk away, lol.

That's the squat. Mine did it about the time they started laying. I ruffle their feathers a little and they fluff up a bit. Not all of the hens do it, just the more friendly ones.

Oh the squat! That is the mating posture. It is how they tell the rooster to come n get it. Means she's mature, and trusts you. It's a good thing. If you haven't gotten eggs yet, you will soon.

That's what she is doing, all right. In lieu of a resident roo she has decided that you must be the roo!

I'm glad you are having so much fun with your girls.

ditto what everyone else is saying....you'll be getting eggs soon, within the next several weeks, I imagine.

My BR is always squatting for me. So just loves to be petted. My Ameraucana's are just now squatting for me and they are a little over a year.
I have four babies two brahams and they love to sit in my hand and the two BR are also sitting in my hand. Just love those babies.
