I have an adopted peahen that just showed up here 2 months ago and I'm quite surprised at how quickly she has settled in with all the other critters here. She ( Sweetpea) quickly learned by day 2 to hop into the chick growout pen to get her food and quickly realized the dog and 2 barn cats (or me) were not going to chase her, unlike the neighbors dogs who would love the opportunity to do so. I keep the cats food bowls on the deck railing so the dog wont eat it all and she figured that out pretty quick as well, but hasn't jumped up there yet to get any...just hangs out next to the deck for any that may accidentally fall over the railing

My 4 chickens free range and she hangs with them each day and then every evening I bring out bread so everyone will go back in for the night...she comes a running to get her share! Then flys up to her favorite grandaddy oak tree right next to the house for the night. I havn't had Peas before but I am quickly loving it! and want to find a male for her.
We are out most evenings messing with my daughter's horse (he doesn't faze her either) and I took some pics of our little group to show you.

She's lovely. :)

But personally I think you just have some not-so-bright chooks! lol.

I've had some real sillies. Could not figure their way out of an open cage with the door right beside them.

The peafowl I've had were not overly bright but I'm sure some are. Haven't had that many peafowl compared to chooks, yet.

Best wishes.

Welcome to the Peafowl section of BYC! You are now on the path to a whole new appreciation of the wonderful world of Peas! I think you should look for a cock to keep her company, eventually she will have 'those' urges and may wonder off looking for love, perhaps in all the wrong places...

I have all kinds of birds running around here and my peafowl are the smartest, most curious, most beautiful birds here, they are unlike any bird i have ever had here i love them and they teach me new things about themselves all the time, my guineas on the other hand are probably about the dumbest bird here but they are great for tick and bug control.

I am SO done with guineas... I am trying to work on the new pen and the insistent yapping is driving me nuts. I know, it's a short trip but oh the auction Friday after next just can not come soon enough.

We may keep a handful for bug control, but that's it.

Do you put feed out for them in the morning if you do stop, they will leave and go forage that is how i keep them away from my house, i use to feed early in the morning but changed to later after they left, now it is quite around the house and barn

DW has been feeding them further away from the coop but closer to where I am working.

I just told her what you said, but she is concerned that there isn't anything for them to forage on. It is still pretty dead and barren around here, just a little green beginning to sprout here and there. Those **** things like being around people, they see us and they come flying back to us yapping "What's up? what's up? what's up?"

Hopefully it will rain tomorrow and we will start getting greener soon.

Mine forage on seeds from last year, new grasses coming up and bugs they will be fine. she can still feed them in the evening but let them work for you that is what they are for, they don't need to be up screaming in your ear can't eat bugs like that ya know LOL
