Our peacock is sick, I think it's something wrong with the crop? Like with chickens ...

The vet wasn't a bird specialist, but yes he did. No, She not missing the target, She just nudging it, if She touch it at all.
Any dog, cat, sheep, or goat vet can run a fecal, I do them at home. If he read it right he ruled out worms and cocci so your bird has a different problem than the simple run of the mill problems we encounter on a regular basis. Good luck with your birdie.

Hi guys, an update.

This evening I sat down in front of her and ate something. She couldn't resist either and I was able to give her some chopped corn kernels.
She was also a little funny again
Let's see what the next few days brings.

We're continuing to give her the medicine twice a day until the tablets run out and of course the water mix, a teaspoon every 1-2 hours.

Thanks for all your messages,
I'll send you another update soon.

(sorry the message is now below, I was a bit confused and didn't see the old message. Wrote a new one and then deleted the duplicate.)

Thank you all very much for your kind comments.

Hello dear animal lovers, an update.

Yes, of course she is still alive. :)
But the problem is not over yet...

We have finished all the medicines and we are no longer giving her the water mix. Only pure borehole water. Food?
Yes, she wants to eat and tries. But it's the same thing, the beak is in the way.
Sometimes she gets small things too, she can see insects and tries. But that is nowhere near enough.

We have found that she can eat well if you "roll" it for her. I make small balls, twice the size of a pea.
Ingredients: corn porridge, soldier larvae and leaves, which we mix when the porridge is cold.
So she gets that 3-4 times a day, 20-25 balls each, plus I roll these balls in wild bird feed seeds.
She likes that and stretches her neck out when I give it to her.
In between during the day, she also gets the dry soldier larvae 20-40. She shows us when she doesn't want to anymore.

She could already drink water on her own, but for the last 2 days she's had water...
Now she doesn't want to drink on her own anymore... we have to give her that too, always in small drops with her food.
When she drinks it sometimes looks like people drink alcohol and then shake themselves. As if it doesn't taste good?

Another question about the beak, we think it's a little too long, the top end. This is our first peacock and we don't know what it should look like. Comparing it with pictures shows no difference.
This also causes her problems when she grooms herself; she can't bite her quills (sometimes).
Here's a same pictures, maybe one of you will see something unusual...

I don't see anything unusual about her preening. Maybe others will be able to tell you more about the beak.

What are her droppings like? What does she weigh? Have you been measuring how much she is eating and drinking each day? What is her behaviour and activity level like in general?

She seemed to improve with the antibiotics. Did that continue or did things get worse again once you stopped them? If so, maybe the vet will give her a repeat prescription?

Did you ever give her the Toltrazuril? I doubt that's the issue at this point because she would have died by now but taking any parasite load off her will help her cope with whatever other issues she's having. I would worm her with Fenbendazole as well if you can get that where you are.

I would advise starting to track her weight daily because that will be the best indicator of the level of intervention she needs. You could also track her intake of food and water daily.

If she's underweight or losing weight I would normally advise crop feeding but in this case I'm unsure if there's some sort of physiological issue so I would be careful and take it slowly if you do it. I'd advise starting to read up about it and source the supplies so you can be ready. It's a good idea to keep them on hand anyway, even if you never use them. This and this are two great threads to start with. That Kaytee baby bird food that's mentioned is amazing stuff if you can get that.

I'm just curious, what would cause that and how would you go about trimming it?
The cause is the bird not wiping its beak on a rough surface which is why we pur our feed bowls on concrete blocks. Some birds also have over active growth rates on the beaks, talons, and spurs and need regular trimming.

Trimming is best done with a flat toenail trimmer, make a snip on one side following the lower beak than another on the opposite side. This makes a V and then nibble a little off the point. Follow with a couple of strokes with a soft padded nail file to finish rounding the tip.

Do not cut straight across the beak as it will cause the beak to shatter and sometimes will create a split that will not grow out.

Hello guys,
@Waterfaery thanks for the message :).

We are not giving her any more medicine or antibiotics. Toltrazuril? No. But we had de-wormed her when we were at the vet...

Her behavior is actually the same as always, she seeks contact with the chickens or stands next to me on a chair. Everything is as it was before.

(Except that she can't eat, drink, or groom herself properly.)

Her poop looks normal to me and it changes a little depending on what we give her... But everything is back to normal, as we know it. In the evening I catch 2-4 moths that fly into the light, yes she can eat them on her own.

About weight: Yes, a week ago at the vet she weighed 2.3 kg. Checked yesterday She is now at 2.4 kg. We are checking it.
About food: we give +- 70g-90g of food throughout the day and +- 4-5 tablespoons of water.
She actually shows us when she doesn't want any more or when she comes when she is hungry....

Thanks. We'll try the Kaytee baby bird food and I'll see what I can do with the beak.
We'll keep you updated.....
