I'd had my heart set on a buff orpington and was told this was a BO pullet. I also purchased a black sex-link and buff brahma from them - no issues there. Now that the chicks are 3 weeks old, it's apparent this one isn't a buff orpington. What do you guys think she is? A production red, maybe? A red sex-link? Her down is awfully yellow to be a production red, but maybe there are variations.

If she is a production red, will she be as nice as the BOs are reported to be? I tried researching my breeds for friendliness, as well as for being decent layers.

Thanks for any help you can give.

looks like a rhode island red. Any chicken can be nice as long as you handle them right. My BOs arent very calm and nice as others say they should be, because I didnt handle them as much. :)

Interesting to hear that your BO's aren't the sweethearts I thought they were. Maybe I got lucky, then!

I'm kind of hoping she's not a RIR as I've heard they can be more aggressive. However, would a production red tend to have a better personality? Or for general purposes are the terms RIR and production red interchangeable?

It may be too soon to tell, but it seems like they've already established a pecking order and the buff brahma is on the top, followed by this mystery chick, with the black sex link at the bottom. That also happens to be the order they are in size, from largest to smallest.

Thanks for the comments. I'd love to hear more!

That looks a lot like one of my baby chicks right after I got them. Mine is a Rhode Island Red (was also sold as a Red).

Threw in a pic of Cadbury right after we got her to show the similarities. ... ignore the rubber duckies, purple wall and Peep.

I however am so far from an expert I'm not sure my two cents is worth much. BUT to me it looks just like all of the Rhode Island Reds they were selling at the pet store.

Edit: though the more I'm reading on this thread the less I feel pet stores actually know what they have.

Thanks for the pic. Your little one is darker than mine - she was really a bright yellow before the feathers started coming in. Still, you may very well be correct. From what I've been learning about production reds, she could be one - just with light coloring instead of a deeper red. Maybe there's some BO mixed in somewhere!

How could I not ignore the cute li'l props in your pic! Ha! What kind is your little black one?

Just for fun, here are some more pics of the threesome when they were younger. You can see how yellow the so-called BO was at that time. Sorry some of the pics are cruddy - but maybe they can at least give you an idea of her coloring.

She's on the right; buff brahma on the left. Less than one week old.

About two weeks old. Mystery chick at upper right.

She's the one preening, age less than a week.

Between one and two weeks old; she's on the right in both pics.

Are production red/RIR chicks this yellow?

I love my Pro reds but i only have roosters

My BO pullet (cream puff) is the sweetest thing ever i have another (cheese puff) but she passed

I love the coloring of the BO and thought one would have looked pretty alongside the brahma and black sex-link. Glad you've got a sweetie!

Sorry, I'm getting carried away with the pics. This was taken of her Sunday.
