It's certainly not pleasant, but they don't seem to really notice it after they're done. I imagine it's no worse than a branding

It does hurt, yes. They get over it fast though and keeps you and their pen mates safer.

Nope. They're awake, and they do scream and struggle. One person holds and the other uses the heat tool on the horn buds
