I thought I had a good roo.....

They have good memories and he probably sees you as a threat now. Putting him on his back will not help and isn't safe. Search for the article on dealing with and training agressive roosters for a better approach.
Had to do something during the moment. He was activity attacking my wife, who has walked past him and the ladies hundred's of times. I grabbed him to stop the attacks. If he sees me as a threat at that time, that's a problem.

I think he was attacking you because he thinks you want his hens. There is a great rooster article on rooster behavior by @Shadrach . I’ll see if I can find it and link it here. It might be helpful for you if you get another rooster.
The thing is the gals were no where near my wife
He came at her from 50' away.

And here is the article I think the other poster was mentioning about dealing with aggressive roosters. (there are more than one articles; this one is very well reviewed, and well written).
Best wishes on your chicken journey, including all the rooster bumps in the road.

I eat roosters until I find a good one. Found 2 in 4 years. Eaten 10.

The two I have are RIR. The last one decided he wanted to be an Olympic swimmer….. and failed. (Water trough). The current one is a darn good one too.

I don’t have time or patience to ‘fix’ a rooster. If they’re aggressive enough to challenge a human…. Just means they’re patient enough to wait till they have the upper hand. Not chancing that with young kids frequently visiting.
