I love my roosters but they can be quirky little critters. It's hard to tell what all is in their head or why they act the way they do sometimes.

A good dog will bite the hand that feeds him, if he is in pain. A lot of humans get nasty too, when in pain.
I have 3 good roosters from 1 to 4 yo. I've rehomed many more. I baby mine, just like the females. I want to be able to pick them up and check for injuries, lice, things like that. I want to be able to file their spurs when needed. Mine are big, but not bad. All have been raised here, by broody hens.
I hope you have better luck with the next rooster.

I agree @Geena, raise up some babies and allow your girls to select THEIR favorite cockerel. Those old girls are more than happy to teach the cockerels manners, and they tend to be spot-on in selecting which one they will TRUST with their lives.

I look at my roos in the same way I'd look at a tamed tiger or lion. They recognize me as the Alpha and give me due space & respect, but I ALWAYS expect them to turn on me in the most unexpected moment. I proceed accordingly.

My favorite calm/good roosters are: Blue Maran, Large Cochin, & Bielefelder.
I've had tons of mean/bad roosters who are now long gone but the worst of them were: Bresse, Leghorns, CCL, Pita Pintas, and the top of the nasty list, Black Copper Marans.

I'm saying you could buy a half-dozen or so straight run chicks and have a very high likelihood that three or four would be cockerels for your older girls to choose from AND get the bonus of some fresh pullets in the bargain. If you brood these young birds in the coop, you can easily integrate them into your flock somewhere between the ages of 3 to 6 weeks old as long as they have places to duck and dive should they need to. The sooner you can safely integrate them, the better. There are FAR fewer squabbles and pecking order issues when juveniles are added to a flock than when 'almost' adult birds are added. Most of my chicks integrate into the flock by their third week of age, and by six weeks of age they're foraging alongside the elder birds, but I live in a VERY warm environment so my wee ones aren't needing the warmth of the flock.
