I thought I had a rose-combed Bantam Marans, but it looks like her first egg may be white! Any ideas

Huh! I guess I still have a lot to learn about breeds. I just saw some pictures of blue laced brahmas - too cool! But she definitely is a lot more delicate. So, who knows?

They are pretty, but very rare, brahmas lay cream/tinted colored eggs, so mix that with a white layer ( which have more delicate bodies) and you would have a good chance of a white layer. I wouldn't think marans mix, as her eggs would be a definite brown.

Frida laid her second egg today and it has a little bit of tint - somewhere between cream and the palest tan, just a hair lighter than the eggs from my frizzled cochin, and softly speckled. So, I still don't know what she is, but at least I'm no longer confused by her eggs being totally white!
I really doubt that she has any Brahma, though, because her personality is as different from my Brahma, Bettina, as possible, in addition to having such a different build. She's very flighty and shy, even now that she has started laying.

personality has nothing to do with what breed they are, in my experience. I have two birds of the same breed, one is really flighty, and hates being held. The other loves being held, and follows me around looking for treats. I was just thinking of feather legged breeds that lay tinted eggs. Beautiful bird by the way!

I said brahma, because there are laced brahmas, it has feathered legs, and the right comb...

brahmas have pea, not rose. I don't see anything brahma about her, type wise either. She's likely one of those 'we will never know' as she doen't look like any breed.. odd mix of low heavy body with a longish tail. for all we know she could be second generation silkie mixed with something long tailed and white egg layer with the black skin and crest lost in her.

I thought her comb looked like a mix of pea and single. I guess I was wrong though.

Now this is an interesting development! I've had a bit of a broody epidemic with my bantams, which finally broke a few days ago. Frida was the last one to join the broody party, so it makes sense that she would be the first to lay again (only broody for a couple days). Today I found in the nest this dark egg!



I don't think the other bantams could make anything this dark, and my two other hens wouldn't make anything this small (or this dark), so, maybe Frida has some marans after all . . .

She may be a part Marans but I see some Sebright in her. No Brahmas because they have a different comb, built like a tank and feathered feet. Marans are single combs and Sebrights have rose combs, so rosecombs are dominant.
