I am moving the hens over to the laying house... and thought I had a good idea which were roosters-NOT!
They are around 3 mos old, hatched in December. I am going to run out and get photos to add right now. I am really new at sexing, but shouldn't I be able to vent sex them at this age? If so- how? What am I looking for? It seems that there should be some tell tale signs to look for at this age, I just don't know what they are!

Oh goodness- long story short, I cannot add photos right now, but I am half way through my chicken move, and running out of daylight! Okay, so if I look at the vent, this will not tell me anything? Is there not a penis or something in there on a rooster? (Please excuse my ignorance!) Some of them are very obviously males, with a larger red comb, significant tail, and tall, upright bodies with large legs (they also seem to be the lighter colored ones). Some however, are not so obvious! If I go by the ones that I know are roosters, that means I only have around 5 roosters out of 20 chickens (which seems wrong for the odds... I would be expecting more like over 10 roosters). Any specific, idiot termed instructions would be greatly appreciated! Just to clarify, these eggs came from a Barred Rock rooster, and a combination of hens; Barred Rock, Columbian Rock, and Cuckoo Maran.
**Yay!!! I think I just made an observation reliable enough to go by... the back of the comb seems to start behind the eye on the roosters, and in front of the eye on the hens... yes??? no???

I think you're making it way more difficult than it should be. At this age, the boys should have pretty good sized combs, their legs and feet should be really sturdy. The barred rock boys will be light colored, the girls darker colored. The girls will have smaller combs. Now the ones that are crosses with the columbians wont be as obvious, but still the combs should be bigger on the boys than the girls.

I agree! I totally thought I had it figured out... until I started seperating them, and I began second guessing myself! I have made my final picks, and am ready to release the 'hopefully females' into the laying house. At this point, "Roosty" (king of the laying house) will let me know if I have made any mistakes! My final count came to 14 females, 6 males. Something just seems too good to be true about that- fingers crossed:)
