I thought my black cochin was a hen! (video)

Same age as the cochin, probably 9 or more weeks. Check out my other vids on youtube and you'll see them as chicks when they were the same size as each other.

The blue game is very feisty but only about half the size of the cochin. Next week I'm going to build their coop and run since they're getting too small for their current cage.

not blue... it's self blue... or lavender... to me it looks more like a hen... but if they're the same age, it does have huge crest and waddles... but i don't see any hackle, or curling tail feathers...

Ah, didn't know there was a difference between blue and self blue. I'm still learning my chicken terminology.

She's got little bumps where I would expect spurs to be coming in, but at this point I'm keeping them both even if they are roos as long as they don't try to kill each other. I've heard OEG roos are real fighters if kept with other roos. Right now the two are inseparable. They play fight but they rarely wander more than a few inches of each other, even when I take them in the back yard or let them loose in the living room.

yeah he's not silver laced...

hey kris... whatever that self blue turns out to be... LOL... hopefully a hen... get her a black OEGB roo (doesn't have to be solid black)... then keep one of their rooster boys, and breed him to her again... you'll get 50% (hopefully) self blue off spring from them...

self blue is like everyone's favorite color or it seems like it is... it's certainly my favorite OEGB color...

Ack, breed the son to the mom? Sounds kinda weird, but ok.

Would these offspring be sellable, then?

The cochin seems to be sprouting black feathers with white outlines around his neck (and a scattered few around the body) - is that called "laced"? I know he's not pure black. He's also got a few dark green feathers in his tail.

yes... do that, and sell offspring... in my area, lavenders are pretty rare... i had to get mine out of state... breeding the offspring to the parents isn't anything icky... LOL... i breed brothers and sisters to each other... no biggie... just every once in a while, get some new blood for them... also, get an OEGB book if you're gonna try to breed for color... that way you can look for your holdbacks based on standards of practice... and cull the ones that aren't nice... or give those away to people that want pets and aren't going to breed them... breeding is FUN!...

this is a silver laced cochin...
