I thought that I bought 2 white leghorn hens...but today I got my first egg from one of them and it was a huge very light brown egg...so I started to read other posted and not sure what I have..possible plymouth rock?

Her she is!!

hi im brand new to this website and chicken raising but as far as i know i have a white leggern too but she hasnt laid an egg yet so the most help i can provide is say i think yours is a leggern because it matches mine? and maybe ask questions that would help a more experienced person answer, is there any way the egg could of came from a different chicken?, and im not sure if it matters or not if it was her first egg, or maybe a certain type of food could of gave it a slight brown hue? ive read feeding them onions will make the egg taste so maybe color could barely get transfered too? hope it helps a little will keep checking back now im a little curious about mine

She looks too plump and small combed to be a Leghorn. My Leghorn girls have big floppy combs, slender bodies and of course lay white eggs. Your white rock should be an excellent layer of big brown eggs (if I'm correct in comparing them to barred rocks). Good luck!

thanks i cant wait to get first egg, i do still have a couple chicken questions but i cant figure out how to post a question where im suppose to, hope people dont mind if i ask here till i figure it out, do you clip the chickens toenails, they are getting long and scratch when on my lap and arm, how do i tell when my chicks are full grown, and is there a way to break them from pecking you i have one thats the sweetest thing but she will just peck peck at anybody just like curiosity i dont know if beaks can be trimmed or not? hope i didnt over load you heh thanks

I've never heard of people clipping chicken's nails, and personally, I don't really think that would be such a good idea because they use those nails to scratch and forage for food... When your chickens start laying eggs, they're grown. :) I once had a hen (australorp) that thought she could peck my finger when I held her. The way I got her to quit, was by asserting that i was the boss of her. You can do this by every time she looks like she's going to peck, tap her fairly hard on the head (just below the comb) with a finger. Beaks CAN be trimmed, but it's best not to because they need their beaks. Hope this helps!

thanks bunches, deff. helps alot, i guess ill just get the nerve to tackle the leggerns wing, she flew out of her run once already, how can you tell if you have bantams or chickens that will grow full, thats the only other thing im worried about i didnt want bantams because of the small eggs, either way i love them but i hope my girls will grow full and give me a big breakfast heh sorry for so many questions
