I used too much DE in the coop and one of my hens is breathing badly

Forgot to include what permethrin I used.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions! I don't think that permethrin 10 is available to buy in the UK, I did order the poultry protector product but it won't arrive until tomorrow.

Spray directly on bird following directions on the bottle since you are UK and I'm not sure what you've actually got.

Use the permethrin asap. Give her some electrolytes to help her hold on until the beasties are gone.

I can't find a permethrin product which is for direct use on birds. This is the only one I can find which is meant for poultry and it's directions say for use in coops.

http://www.nettexpoultry.com/products/mite-pest-control/total-mite-liquid-concentrate

'To be used on poultry houses, arks, coops, outbuildings etc. Penetrates deep into cracks, crevices and corners which parasites use as harbourages. Contains a range of disinfectants to kill bacteria, yeast and fungi such as E-Coli, Salmonella, Listeria and Ps Aeruginosa.'

I'm worried it would be harmful to use this on her, I don't know what to do now...

Also, sorry if this is a silly question but what form should I buy the electrolytes in? A powder form? I've never seen any for sale before so I'm not sure where to buy.

The video doesn't pick up the sounds she's making very well. She's a little raspy, and it sounds like her stomach is making odd grumbling noises every so often.

She's pretty delicate so I'm afraid to bathe her, but I'll try as soon as the shops open and I can try to buy a product with permethrin. I'm struggling to find one which is for direct use on birds and available to buy in the UK.

She did just take a couple sips of water for the first time.

Thank you for everyone's advice.

It doesn’t need to be as advertised for birds, most people use spray made for horses and cattle or the concentrate that is picture above. If you have a feed store near you, you’ll be able to find a plenty of horse fly sprays with permethrin in them. It will not harm her, but the mites certainly will.

The label on that specifically says not for direct use on birds, so I would hesitate to do so.

From a quick Amazon uk search it doesn't appear you can get permethrin in the UK.

I am seeing some mite dusting products that use tea tree oil, peppermint, and lavender.

And a chick nutri drop product that seems similar to the vitamins and electrolyte solutions we get in the US.

Sorry I can't give very informed answers as your product availability is quite different than the US.

I have a couple of feed stores near me opening in three hours that I will try, thank you. So any horse fly spray will be safe to use on her? I'll check to make sure they have permethrin first.

Thanks again.

I believe the reason it says not to use that directly on birds is because it is an oil based product, rather than water based. There might also be some funky UK laws about permethrin that I wouldn’t know anything about, and in that case they would need to “cover their tail feathers” so to speak.

Not just any horse/cattle spray; it would specifically need to have permethrin in it, preferably 10%. Personally, I’ve never seen it advertised just for poultry. A little spray under the wings, vent, and between the neck feathers will go a long way. Sometimes they come in concentrated bottles that you need to mix up yourself, I would give you some brand names but I have no idea what you have across the pond. :)

There’s a ton of threads on BYC about permethrin spray and mite infestations. Here’s a long but good read: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/permethrin-spray.1134783/

Thank you so much. Annoyingly the first product isn't available for prime delivery so I'd have to wait 4-7 days to receive it, I've bought it anyway.

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it!

Of course! I probably wouldn’t use the oil based spray directly on the birds, but of course you need to weigh risks vs benefits if they’re dying of mite infestation right now.
You might get away with using it VERY sparingly and as close to the skin as possible. Oil will last much longer than water which makes it great for spraying down buildings, but it’s messy and easy to overdo.

Anyways, best of luck to you and your birds. :)
