RIR roo is mean! I can handle him, but i have a young nephew that loves to play outside and the roo attacks me, so i worry that he will get my nephew! What breed rooster would better suit my situation?

umm my banty roo lets my kids and the kids from the block to carry him like a doll, banties apparently can't service the bigger breeds though.

Cochin.

I have a bantam cochin rooster and he is the sweetest. I can pick him up and he will nuzzle my face and fall asleep. Cochins are probably the perfect chickens for children.
Although my roo can be mean to my hens at times, I don't think he would ever hurt me or anyone else. But I know you can't let your guard down. And I hope I didn't just jinx myself!!
I love my roo.

I think cochins or silkies would be your best best for a sweet rooster, especially if you handle them as chicks. Cochins and silkies tend to be very docile and calm, and while I'm sure there's some nasty roosters out there of both, I think having one of those two breeds would help your chances considerably of having a calm, docile rooster.

I think it has a lot to do with the individual bird--instead of breed. Maybe you could find a roo that is nice from someone close to you--If you are looking for a certain breed, look on the breeders pages of that breed and see if someone has one to offer. If not, try Craigs list or you local paper. I know my Buff Orpington roo was a doll until he reached 10-11 months old --hormones were rampant..He started flogging me, my dh and our grandson.. then he started being too rough with the girls. Being new to chickens, it was hard to know if we weren't 'Alpha' enough or if he was just a bad 'seed'. Much has changed== He now has a huge flock of big, big girls and they free range from sun up to sun down, nesting in a huge barn w / goats, donkeys, 1/4horses and draft horses. He is being very nice . We will see if he changes.

I agree with the "depends on the individual bird". My current top rooster, Albie, is really nice; he is a large golden/white mixed breed. The one before him was horrible, flogged me, the dog and Albie. Out of the mixed breed roo's that were butchered this spring, one EE was very aggressive.

It's all in the raising, every single one of my roos can be held, petted, carried around, and you are completely safe with them. I've raised all of them that way.

I have 3 roos, a silkie, a brahma, and a americana. All three are great! Protective of their girls and me. the silkie and brahma even know their names. Just got rid of a polish. Don't go there!
