You know I have never had any issues with mine but I live in the desert where it is not muddy. I am not too sure I would want feather-footed breeds in a muddy place. The only issue with cochins is BROODINESS! They want to be mommys more than they want to feed you for sure. Another thing that kinda came as a surprise is LF cochins look really big but they are all fluff and the eggs are not as big as you would think. Think small grocery store size. Sometimes I have to trim their hiney fluff cause it gets dirty occasionally. Nothing horrible but I don't like funky hineys so I just give them hiney hair cuts.

ETA: When mine molted this past year, all that fluff left my backyard looking like King Kong and Godzilla got in a pillow fight! My advice to anyone with molting LF cochins is don't even try to attempt to clean up the feathers til it's over. You will be fighting a losing battle if you do.

They do get dirty when it's muddy out. I don't have cochins, but I have a light brahma. Unless you want spotless chickens, I don't think it's a big deal. It dries and they clean the gunk off. (but if you are showing them, then that might be a consideration)

My cochins banties are the best. They are the most friendliest breed that I have. The ladies are always broody. One hen can go broody at least 3 times a year. The feathers don't get messed up too bad. I let them free range and never any problems. They don't get into any trouble and they mind their own business. They are so sweet. They walk up to you and you can pick them up and rub them with no fussing. And they love hatching eggs from Standard chickens. They are the best mothers! I love my girls !!! Wish I had more.

I have LF in Buff, Blue and Black all hens, I have a white hen and a blue roo in Bantams. I love them all. They are a beautiful bird. My advice is to get some of each. Good luck.

I have standard cochins in white, blue, buff and partridge, and silver laced. They free range all the time. They do get dirty sometimes but they do OK. They are so incredibly friendly. They run up to me whenever I come out of the house. They are constantly broody. All in all, they are great!
