I want some mandarins that arent overpriced!!

See there are ducks available priced at those lower prices. The only problem is you really have to search and search and search for them. If you want them as easy to find then you have to pay the easy to find price.

This is true, but the simple fact of the matter is, the internet is what has pushed them up in price. The supply/demand thing isnt too much to blame here, there are tons of mandarins available, they and the wood duck are kept by just about every one in the duck world.They are still readily available for the $50 range, you just have to look for them. $70 a pair, is a bit high, as for quality, a mandarin is a mandarin, of course you dont want a wishy washy breeder, but most with these type ducks are decent folks, sorry if I stepped on some toes, but this is just the way I look at after 20 years of having over 100 species of migratory waterfowl myself!

P.S., By the way, just got the new Gazette yesterday, guess what, they are in there for $45 per pair, just like 20 years ago

I agree with Spectrum ranch. most of the time I sell mine for 60.00. I also feed them alot of mazuri (35.00 abag)I have had the gazzette for many years but just try to get a 45 dollar pr there goodluck alot of the ads are not updated.There is always a deal here and there but if you want to see the nomal price AND if available go to eggbid on the internet, before the internet most of these more exotic birds were hard to find.That being said I REALLY do hope you find some at a cheap price. I have sold some of my birds for less for younger people (pick up only) because they are our future.

I am not sure with most peoples jobs, but seeing that the more I am working on my normal business the better.... It is worth it to me to pay 20 - 30$ more for a pair then wasting 2 -3 hours looking for a better price... my time is way way too valuable for that.

It reminds me of my grandma that we use to go shopping for... she would have us go to 3 or 4 different stores to get the cheapest price, and in the mean time we would spend more on gas then she was saving... as well as time.

Sometimes it is worth it to just buy the higher price and not worry about trying to find it for 10$ cheaper.... but again, I know there are kids and people that have a lot of time at home that it isn't as big of a deal

Start local by using Craigslist, you can put a want ad in the farm and garden section. You may find a breeder within driving distance to save you on the box and shipping cost. Also buy an adult pair, don't bother with hatching eggs. You might also ask around on the different poultry/waterfowl forums for a breeder close by.

Remember too that even though the Mandarin and Wood ducks look great and everybody wants to add them to their collection..............they are nothing like your domestic breeds in both temperament and housing needs.

Lastly, this is the toughest time to find a pair. If you can wait till fall there will be more available.

There is actually a pair on eggbid now for $35. Don't know what they will end up at, but it might be worth a bid. Maybe you'll get lucky and have no one else bid.

Thanks, i checked eggbid.com unfortunately someone placed a bid and it won't let anyone with a "Free email domain" register so they can bid.

but i got on craigslist so maybe i'll have some luck there. Thanks for all the advice.

I can provide all the leads in the world, all he has to do is PM me and I will be happy to. Have done it for dozens of other people already on here this year. And yes, it is very simple to find them if you know where to look as I DO. Yes I have kept them (and about 100 other species)since I was 8-9 years old, I'm 35 now. I recently had to sell off all of them due to a move. Just because I dont have any at the moment has absolutely no baring on weather or not I know what I am talking about. I have worked with, referred over to and met most all the big waterfowl breeders in the country. I have even worked with the Bronx Zoo Wildlife Conservation Society in helping them collect waterfowl and actually housed about a 100 for them here at my farm while they got a new exhibit built for them. So all these little remarks about the price and weather or not I know what I am talking about, well......
If you want to pay $60-$70 for them, fine, do it. The O.P. doesnt, and my point here is, they dont have to, they are available at cheaper prices if you'll just look. Apparently every one on here hates the Gazette, what a shame, it's full of great article and such on helping raise these birds, much better than a forum. Well in addition to that one, you can also try the A.P.W.S. magazine, they have the same deal. As for age of the ads, yes, they role some over, but the same people in them will always have them, as another poster mentioned, right now is a bad time to try to find some, Fall months are much better to start with as everyone has there season hatch ready to go.
But as for finding some, all you have to do is ask me, I will be glad to. I will not put private breeders info on a web forum site though...

KansasKid - are you in Kansas? Here is a thread you can get info about an exotic auction in Yates Center in the spring and fall. Post #22 lists some of the birds they had consigned last fall. I hear that someone local brings nice exotic birds to each auction. You might get their name to deal with them outside the auction. ???
