I want to buy some bulk grains at the grocery store for this winter.

Lentils & peas, or split peas do not have to be cooked before feeding to your birds. If you want a higher grade mix of grains, it may be cheaper to find a good brand of pigeon grain to feed. It would probably be cheaper also.

Great advice guys! I think I would like to try sprouting peas, wheat, barley, oats, blackoils, millet.....anybody with Rye experience? I hear flax turns into gooey mess and not many people had good experience with it....I also thought sprouting watermelon or pumpkin seeds would be fun....

I had original been feeding my chickens a homemade scratch that had raw lentils in it and they were refusing to eat them leaving behind these little piles of lentils and eating everything else. I posted about it and was told by several people that they were not good for them and potentially poisonous.

I also read it here: (scroll down to the chart at the bottom)

I did not do any further research, which I guess is bad on me. If you find it is not true, please let me know. I would be very interested.

I do not know if peas would be a problem or not. I will also read more and see what info I can find.

Here's a nice peas link for anyone that's interested. I do feed raw split peas and raw Austrian peas to my chickens.

see pg. 11 where they mention:
"Whereas peas and lupins are often grown intentionally
for animal feed, the other major feed pulses such
as lentils, chick peas and beans are grown mainly for
human consumption. Occasionally they are downgraded
for use in animal feeds. They can be good
nutrient sources and effective feed ingredients; however,
their economic value in feed is lower than feed
peas. Relatively high levels of tannins in both lentils
and faba beans limit their use in swine and poultry
feeds."

Someone around here was selling poultry feed on Craigslist with lentils in it. It looked like a decent mix. I wouldn't mind feeding a few lentils raw myself, just wouldn't go overboard with it.
