I want to have back yard chickens!

Writing from Lancaster PA., not the city but a borough. I've been told by neighbors that I can't have byc. However no one is sure and no one knows who to ask. Anyone out there have any advice? I was raised on a farm and I just want eggs.... fresh, real, healthy eggs without paying a fortune. I eat Paleo and have made free range eggs a staple of my diet. (if you haven't heard of it google paleo. Life changing for me!) I have taken my little garden more seriously and plan to grow as much as possible. Fortunately I live in Amish country and farmers markets are plentiful in case I have to supplement. I've found farm raised, grass fed beef locally but this chicken thing has me stumped. I love chickens... How could you not? They are low maintenance delightful animals...
I would appreciate any input and look forward to finding some chicken friends on BYC !
