I would really not worry. We just got a flock of production layers 2 weeks ago. These guys had been cooped/penned the whole year they'd been alive. The third day they were here we open up the pen and let them free range from dawn to dusk. When dusk came they were all back at the temporary coop waiting for us to close the door. They aren't dumb.
