I have a question I’m hoping someone might know the answer to so I bought 4 California grey chicks, all supposed to be pullets. 3 look all the same and are the same size, 1 is much smaller and getting a lot more color. So did I get a rooster, or possibly different kind of chick?!? Or are they normally not similar?**** Only talking about two black chicks in the pictures. #NewToThisChickenWorld

So, I'm super new to this too. Keep that in mind.

I actually learned about these guys while I was researching one of their hybrid breeds, California Whites.

They are also known as Production Blacks and originated at Ideal Poultry. They can be sexed at hatch as they have barred genes.

This site here: http://www.raising-chickens.org/california-white.html claims that they are white leghorn x barred plymouth rock. If what I've read so far is true, that would mean that males would have white dots on their foreheads while females would have no head spot.

I'm not sure how long the dot lasts, but I can definitely see some white / grey on your chick's head... so I would say, yes, they are the same breed but the one gaining patterns is a cockerel.
