If it's still very young, the comb is too big and red. If it's close to 5 months or so, that's different. @TheOddOneOut is very good at telling these things.

I know the owners so I am guessing they really believed the customer. At one point they were checking the legs for Spurs. Not very reliable sexing for a young chicken, right?
Yes. Spurs in males come in after about a year.
My silkies are getting them in at about 20 weeks.
Hens can have spurs too.
