i was unaware this is a consistent problem

From All I have read, on this very forum, 5 birds from 20 shipped eggs is not bad at all. There is NO GUARANTEE on Shipped eggs. The shipper has no control over what happens at the post office . I am sorry you are disgruntled. Perhaps you can take this as a "New to Chicken's" lesson, and learn from it. It does make me curious though as to why this would be your first post?

I consider it a good hatch when I get 30% on shipped eggs. Anything above that and I am thrilled.

And I take into consideration the shipping distance. I expect (hope) for better from 200 miles than I do from 2000.

Please do check the link provided. Shipped eggs are a risk. I have spent large amounts of money and have no chicks hatch. It is often the post office handling that causes the eggs not to hatch. I hope you will revise your title since it is rather harsh to the seller. BTY a don't know the seller.

I don't know this woman you are talking about but she probably meant there is no guarantee on the hatch rate. Sellers cannot guarantee hatch rates. I have bought lots of eggs that were shipped to me this year and I only got 4 chicks out of it all. I even bought 4 dozen hatching eggs from a friend of mine (who lives local) and only got 1 chick (it died from a mouse that wounded its little neck). So I bought more eggs from this same friend and this time all but 4 eggs is doing better this time around.

If the seller does a good job with wrapping and packing the eggs so they won't break and the eggs aren't old then they have done their job. There is nothing a seller can do once the eggs is at the post office. The seller can't be responsible for what happens in our incubators either.

I know it is easy to say the eggs weren't fertile and blame the seller or the post office. This really isn't a good time of the year to be shipping eggs with the heat and all. I have a BYC member that I am going to be ordering more eggs from once it gets cool weather. I got one precious turken chick out of her eggs but I am happy for the one that even made it.

Given the choice between live chicks and hatching eggs, I buy live chicks whenever possible, at least until mine starts laying.

Are you sure you did not misunderstand her when she said she could not guarantee fertility? It is true that she cannot, but that is why they ship a few extra eggs in case one or two were from hens that were not the roosters favorite.

When you have given up hope on the eggs, open them carefully and examine the yolks and air sacks. If the yolks are "scrambled" or the air sack broken, then it wasn't a fertillity issue, just the usual handling at the post office is hard on eggs.

Yes in every business there will be some that take advantage of their customers, and we should all tell each other about it when it happens.

But I'm not certain this is the seller's fault. It is probably not yours or or incubator's fault either. More like a function of the postal service (which is not designed to ship live animals or embryos, so no wonder things do not always work out well).

Bummer that we cannot come up with a better way to distribute eggs and chicks!

You are lucky that you hatched any eggs at all from shipped eggs. Rather than make your first post here a complaining whiney post, you might want to read first and see how difficult it is to hatch at all from shipped eggs. I dont blame that person one bit for not wanting to send you any more eggs.
