When we purchased the trio, they were sold to us as Ameraucanas. I discounted that because I knew that most people who sold Ameraucanas were actually selling EE's.

Tonight I went to the Ameraucana.org website and found exact replicas of my birds and learned that if it has muffs, a beard, a tail and is a recognized color, then it is Ameraucana. These pics are exact replicas of my birds. They've all got muffs, beards and tailios! And they're recognized colors.

and my Silver female...I wouldn't have called her silver though...

Now to get RueRoo interested in these girls. He won't touch them! He's all about my Buff Orps. He likes big buffs (and he cannot lie).

That's great! Congrats on your "rediscovery - you found a reputable breeder who actually had Ameraucanas. I too, would have been skepticle after reading about the EE's on here. Sounds like you got lucky!

You are lucky to have stumbled across real ameraucanas! Were they expensive? I noticed the pictures you posted are from the ameraucana website. I'd love to see the birds you bought - can you post pictures of them?

The pictures are from the Ameraucana Breeders Club site, as someone noted. We'd like to see the ones you yourself have! Though some may appear similar to the standard colors, often they are only similar and not those actual colors. If you got some actual colors and true Ameraucanas, you are very fortunate! They are fabulous birds.

Ok! I'll take some when I go home for lunch today and post them up. I'm actually quite tickled! When I went out to look at them this morning, I confirmed that only two of them are ameraucanas. The second hen doesn't have muffs or a beard. She's just a wheaten colored EE and not actually a silver. But the roo for sure is a solid white one and the brown and black is an absolute as well.

I think my DH paid $10 per bird for them last year. I'm thinking about going back out there myself to see if they might have a couple more pullets. That way I can pick out only the TRUE ameraucanas and maybe get some fertile eggs from them. Of course I'll have to take out the buffs in order to get any attentions from RueRoo.

I'm not sure that statement is completely true. I've made several crosses with my ameraucanas and many of the hybrids match your description, yet are obviously hybrids. I would say as long as they don't have any disqualifying traits, they could be shown as an ameraucana, but they won't necessarily be good representatives of the breed and could have many minor faults. If you take a look at the American Standard of Perfection, you will see there are many subtle characteristics that make the breed.

Although you may be able to show them as ameraucanas, I'm not sure you could correctly sell them as true ameraucanas without a little more knowledge of their background and the consistency of type they produce. If your birds prove to breed true to type, then I would say you could confidently call them ameraucanas. The fact that one doesn't have a beard or muffs, make me a little suspicious of their background.

Ok let's get some expert opinions now. The pictures aren't the best. My birds are camera shy for some reason.

This is my RueRoo. He's only about six months old so I think he still has some feathering to finish in. Also we've had a bad case of the buffalo gnats and he along with the buff orps have been scratching at their chins with their feet and losing feathers there! The buffs are definately more affected than RueRoo.

And this is Mimi. She's my brown/black and is the same age as RueRoo.

You can see Treeners tail in this one. Treeners is my 3rd blue egg layer who has no muffs or beard...but she has a beautiful tailio!

And this is a pic of Mimi (black pullet) in the back when she was about 3 months old. Hehe and when I first began to suspect that RueRoo was a roo.
